Highlight: Unknown Artist 'Climbing Girl/La Groove'

Due to a ghost in the machine the playlist from last Sunday's In The Pocket with 90 show was lost in the ether. Rather annoying that, as I had the pleasure of a guest appearance from CoopaBlu, who dropped a lovely selection of soulful funky stuff - more than appropriate for a Sunday afternoon.

In lieu of said rogue playlist, I've decided to highlight a piece of vinyl I played during the show, and which I purchased very recently from those fine fellows at Conch Records. By an unknown artist, this actually quite rare (I had no idea as I was making the purchase, I promise you) 12" white label is a tasty slice of what I'm calling 'slow disco'. Both sides revolve around an ever-repeating and steadily-building riff, with organs, guitars, percussion and subtle change-ups providing the impetus to keep the tracks bubbling along nicely.

Follow this link to have a listen to a little of each track from this worthy Japanese-released 12" single. I promise I'll drop it on another of my radio shows soon...

Celebrating the good ol' fashioned crate digging experience this week, having had the opportunity to spend a couple of days searching through vinyl at both Conch & Real Groovy.

Both offer world class record shopping experiences, in my opinion: the selection of 2nd hand music at Groovy is huge, and worthy of a few hours investment; while having Cian personally select a stack to sift through with the headphones on is the epitome of the phrase "enjoyable & educational".

It's all well & good to pillage blogs for mp3 downloads - after all, it's really about the music, not the platform - but there's something truly therapeutic about searching for, buying, playing & listening to vinyl records; some connection that heals the soul in a way the digital search & consumption of music just can't quite manage.

UPDATE: having said all of the above, check out the Never Enough Rhodes blog (where I picked up the tasty Marvin mix played on the show above!). Propers, squire!

Panama! 2

Conch Records is hosting the NZ launch for the brand new Panama! 2 compilation & using it as an excuse to showcase the might fine Soundway Records label - who have been releasing exceptional collections of Afro, Latin, Columbian, Panamanian... well, the music these guys put out is incredible, let's just say that much!

Sunday 31st May from 2pm, at Conch Records, 115a Ponsonby Rd, with tunes selected by Cian, Bobby Brazuka & yours truly, Bro 90.

See you there!
